Cox’s Bazaar, Refugee camp – August 4, 2025

A tragic accident occurred between Camp 18 and Camp 10 near Zafojja Bazar when an overloaded truck transporting bricks overturned and crashed onto a roadside shelter. Fortunately, no casualties were reported in the incident, but the accident has raised fresh concerns about road safety and heavy vehicle operations within the Rohingya refugee camps.

Eyewitnesses said the truck appeared to be carrying far more bricks than its capacity allowed, causing it to lose balance while navigating the narrow, uneven roads that connect the camps. The shelter it fell on was reportedly unoccupied at the time, narrowly avoiding a fatal disaster.

Although no one was injured, local residents and aid workers have expressed deep concern over the frequency of such accidents in and around the refugee camps. Many note that overloaded trucks, reckless driving, and poor road infrastructure have repeatedly led to fatal incidents involving Rohingya refugees over the years.

“This is not the first time,” said a resident of Camp 10. “In the past, such accidents have taken lives. We live in constant fear.”

Community leaders and humanitarian organizations are urging authorities to regulate truck operations more strictly, enforce load limits, and improve infrastructure to prevent future tragedies.

With nearly a million Rohingya refugees living in cramped conditions across the Cox’s Bazar camps, even minor accidents can quickly turn deadly. Calls are growing louder for immediate action to ensure the safety of vulnerable communities already grappling with the hardships of displacement.
