Global Efforts Renewed to Resolve Rohingya Crisis

International attention on the protracted Rohingya crisis is set to intensify in the coming months, as three major conferences have been scheduled to discuss humanitarian support and the future of more than 1.4 million displaced Rohingyas living in Bangladesh.

The first gathering, a three-day Stakeholder Dialogue on the Rohingya Situation, will be held in Cox’s Bazar from 24 to 26 August. The event will bring together foreign ministers from at least 10 countries, representatives of the United Nations and other agencies, and Rohingya delegates. Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus will attend as chief guest. The program will include working sessions, cultural events, exhibitions, and a field visit to the refugee camps.

Following this, a high-level meeting will take place on 30 September in New York alongside the UN General Assembly. The final conference is scheduled for 6 December in Doha, Qatar, where a position paper based on the outcomes of the earlier meetings will be presented.

The initiatives come at a time when international focus on the Rohingya issue has waned due to global crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine war, and the recent escalation of the Israel-Palestine conflict. Meanwhile, worsening conditions in Rakhine State now partly controlled by the Arakan Army have made the safe return of Rohingyas increasingly uncertain.

Bangladesh’s interim government has taken the lead in organizing these meetings, aiming to secure fresh international commitments both politically and financially. National Security Adviser Khalilur Rahman said the Cox’s Bazar dialogue would form the foundation for discussions in New York and Doha.

Chief Adviser Yunus had earlier proposed at the UN General Assembly the need for an international forum to address the Rohingya situation and explore “forward-looking” solutions. The upcoming conferences are seen as the beginning of a renewed global effort to resolve one of the world’s most pressing refugee crises.
