Dhaka – August 25, 2025

On the eighth anniversary of the Rohingya crisis, a group of diplomatic missions in Bangladesh released a joint statement reaffirming their commitment to supporting the Rohingya people and the communities hosting them. The statement reflects on the Myanmar military’s actions that forced over 1.1 million Rohingya to flee their homes and remain displaced in Bangladesh.

The diplomatic missions expressed deep appreciation for the people and Government of Bangladesh for their continued generosity in sheltering Rohingya refugees, including new arrivals, and in facilitating life-saving humanitarian assistance amid deteriorating conditions in Rakhine State.

“Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh want to return to their homes,” the statement said, stressing that while the international community is committed to finding pathways towards repatriation, conditions in Myanmar are not yet conducive for safe, voluntary, and dignified return. The diplomats emphasized that a sustainable solution can only be achieved by addressing the root causes of displacement, which requires peace and stability in Myanmar.

The statement strongly condemned ongoing violence and human rights abuses by the Myanmar military and armed groups, calling for an immediate end to violence and for humanitarian access to be ensured. It also urged the release of unjustly detained individuals and reaffirmed support for international accountability efforts.

Looking ahead, the diplomatic missions said they would continue working with the Government of Bangladesh and international partners to draw attention to the crisis at the upcoming High-Level Conference in September 2025. They advocated for more durable solutions for Rohingya refugees, including enhancing self-reliance, increasing humanitarian funding, and preparing refugees for eventual return to Myanmar. Support for host communities in Cox’s Bazar also remains a priority.

Underscoring the need for meaningful engagement and inclusive representation, the statement highlighted the importance of empowering Rohingya to live safe, purposeful, and dignified lives while in Bangladesh.

After eight years, the diplomats reaffirmed that the international community stands steadfast with both the Rohingya and Bangladesh, committed to seeking long-term durable solutions to the crisis and addressing its root causes.

The joint statement was endorsed by diplomatic missions from Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the European Union Delegation in Bangladesh.
