Arakan Army Captures Junta’s Acting Chief of Strategy and Troops

Magway, September 5

The Arakan Army (AA) announced today, September 5, that it has captured 17 members of the junta’s strategic office, including its acting chief of strategy.

Among those captured were 17 members of the junta’s No. 992 Strategic Group under the No. 99 Light Infantry Division Headquarters, including Acting Chief of Strategy, Deputy Major Kyaw Kyaw Thet, 46, with military ID number Army/33144.

They were reportedly captured by the Arakan Army during clashes in the Goat Se Yoe area of Magway Region at around 8 p.m. on February 4, 2025.

It is reported that the ceremony held by Light Infantry Battalion 109, under Division 99, to welcome back troops returning to their original battalion after serving in Magway Region, was merely an attempt to cover up battlefield losses. The battalion had recently been involved in the Ann-Padan operation, which the junta claimed as a success, while in reality, the ceremony was staged to hide the setbacks faced on the frontlines.

Clashes were reported to be taking place about 2 kilometers and 1.7 kilometers west of Sinlam Village in Pantaung Township, Bago Region.

In addition, clashes were also reported in the mountain range about 2.5 kilometers northeast of Nyaung Kyoe Village in Pantaung Township, Bago Region.

Clashes were also reported around Set Set Yo Village, near the border between Ayeyarwady Region and Rakhine State.
