WFP Warns of Looming Rohingya Food Crisis, Urges Global Action

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has warned that food aid for Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar may run out by the end of November unless urgent international funding is secured.

During his visit to Bangladesh, Carl Skau, WFP’s Deputy Executive Director, stressed that over a million Rohingya refugees remain 100% dependent on food assistance, and without fresh funding, the crisis could spiral into widespread hunger.

WFP urgently requires USD 60 million over the next six months and USD 167 million over the coming year to sustain operations. Skau cautioned that without this support, many refugees may be forced to leave the camps in search of food, heightening instability in the region.

The U.S. currently provides nearly 60% of WFP’s support for Rohingya aid, but Skau called on other countries including Gulf states, Southeast Asian nations, and members of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation to step in with greater contributions.

WFP noted that about 82 cents of every aid dollar directly supports refugees, with food largely sourced within Bangladesh, contributing to the local economy. The agency has also projected savings of $19 million from operational adjustments.

Highlighting WFP’s 50 years of partnership with Bangladesh, Skau said the agency remains committed to supporting both refugee and host communities. However, he warned that unless the global community acts swiftly, “a severe food crisis will unfold in the Rohingya camps.”
