In the upcoming election to be held by the military junta, the Arakan Front Party (AFP) will contest 64 seats across Rakhine State, party chairman Dr. Aye Maung told Popular News.
He also confirmed that the party will compete in all 17 townships controlled by the Arakan Army (AA), including one seat reserved for Rakhine indigenous ethnic representatives.
Dr. Aye Maung told Popular News that the elections for all three parliamentary bodies in Rakhine State’s 17 townships could potentially be completed in a single day on December 28. He added that his party plans to contest all 17 townships, including one seat reserved for indigenous affairs, aiming to win around 64 seats in total and is doing its best to secure as many as possible.
In the 2020 election, the Arakan Front Party (AFP) contested 6 seats in the Rakhine State Hluttaw, 11 seats in the Pyithu Hluttaw (House of Representatives), and 20 seats in the State Hluttaw across Rakhine State.
However, the party only won 1 seat in the Pyithu Hluttaw and 2 seats in the Rakhine State Hluttaw.
Dr. Aye Maung, chairman of the AFP, told Popular News that in the upcoming election, the party will contest for a National Parliament seat in the junta-controlled constituencies in Sittwe.
Dr. Aye Maung said he will contest in Sittwe constituencies under the first-past-the-post (FPTP) system.
Dr. Aye Maung told Popular News, “I will contest in the Sittwe constituencies of Rakhine State under the first-past-the-post system. There are three constituencies, and I aim to run as a National Parliament representative from there.”
The Arakan Front Party, led by Dr. Aye Maung, is preparing to contest all three parliamentary bodies in every constituency across Rakhine State in the upcoming election.
In Rakhine, only six parties are officially registered, including the Arakan Front Party (AFP) led by Dr. Aye Maung, former chairman of the ANP.
Several Rakhine-based parties have received approval to register under the Junta’s Military Commission. These include the Rakhine State National United Party (RSNUP), the Khami National Development Party, the Mro Indigenous Party, the Mro National Development Party (MNDP), and the Rakhine Nationalities Party (RNP), which is led by former Kyaukphru MP U Ba Shein of the Arakan National Party (ANP).
Under the control of the junta’s military commission, the election commission established by the junta in Sittwe, Kyaukphru, and Man Aung townships has created conditions for voters to cast their ballots in the upcoming election.
