The Union Election Commission under the military junta announced on September 14 that elections will not be held in ten townships currently under the control of the Arakan Army (AA).
The ten townships are Rambre, Pauktaw, Ponnakyun, Rathedaung, Buthidaung, Maungdaw, Kyauktaw, Minbra, Myaybon, and Mrauk-U.
The Union Election Commission under the military junta announced that during the upcoming general elections scheduled to begin on December 28, elections will not be held in certain constituencies for three levels of parliament.
It stated that elections will not take place in a total of 121 constituencies for the Pyithu Hluttaw (People’s Assembly), the Amyotha Hluttaw (National Assembly), and the Region or State Hluttaw.
In Rakhine State, elections will not be held in ten townships for the Pyithu Hluttaw, and there are also two constituencies for the Amyotha Hluttaw where elections will not be held.
In addition, it was stated that elections for the State Hluttaw will also not be held in those ten townships.
A total of six Rakhine-based political parties, including the Arakan Front Party (AFP) led by Dr. Aye Maung, have registered to contest in the elections.
The election commission under the junta has approved the registration of several parties, including the Rakhine State National United Party (RSNUP), the Khami National Development Party, the Mro Ethnic Party, and the Mro National Development Party (MNDP). It has also approved the Rakhine Nationalities Party (RNP), led by U Ba Shein, a former Kyaukphru MP from the Arakan National Party (ANP).
Dr. Aye Maung, chairman of the Arakan Front Party (AFP), told Popular News that his party will contest in 64 constituencies, including across the whole of Rakhine State.
