Maungdaw, September 17.

Local residents from Maungdaw confirmed that two civilians were killed in Maungdaw Township, which is under the control of the Arakan Army (AA).

It is reported that in Taman Thar Village, Maungdaw Township, the victims were Aye Zanda Nwe, a 38-year-old daughter of U San Thein (Htwie) and Daw May Sein, and Maung Maung Hlaing, a 12-year-old son of U Maung Htun Hla and Daw Ma Thein Hla.

They were killed near Inn Chaung village, close to the Arakan-Bangladesh border, but villagers said it is still unclear on exactly which day they were killed.

“It has been three days since we lost contact with them. We only learned this morning that they had been killed. We found out about the killing when someone called their family to say that the bodies had been found,” a resident of Taman Thar village told Border News Agency.

They are originally from Taman Thar village but had been living and working in Inn Chaung village, while another person had stayed behind at home to take care of the house, according to residents of Teman Thar village.

Residents of Teman Thar village said there has been activity by armed Rohingya extremists near Inn Chaung village, close to the Arakan-Bangladesh border, and it is possible that they were the ones who carried out the killings.

“The families and villagers went along to see for themselves. People are saying that ARSA carried out the killings, but we can’t say for certain yet,” a family member told Border News Agency.

The villages are remote and isolated, with poor road connections and damaged routes, making transportation difficult. Locals say this has put residents in constant danger.

Although there are Arakan Army (AA) military camps near those villages, residents of Maungdaw say that incidents of civilians being abducted for ransom and even killed by armed extremists still occur frequently.

There has been ongoing activity by armed Rohingya extremists along the Arakan-Bangladesh border, posing a serious threat to the lives and security of local civilians. Residents are calling on the Arakan Army (AA) to take decisive action to completely eliminate these extremist groups.
