Local residents of Maungdaw Township said that in the area under the control of the Arakan Army (AA), a young man stepped on a landmine and had his right leg blown off just above the ankle.

The young man, Mro ethnicity, was identified as 21-year-old Maung Shwe Het from Grite Chaung village in Maungdaw Township.

He reportedly stepped on the landmine around 12 noon today, September 24, while heading to a hillside farm located about two miles away from his village.

As a result of the explosion, his right leg was blown off just above the ankle, leaving him with severe injuries, according to local sources.

“The injuries are severe. His left leg was blown off just above the ankle. When he was taken to the township hospital, the doctors said his condition was critical,” a local resident of Maungdaw told Border News Agency.

On May 1, a Muslim man from Paungza Village in Maungdaw Township also stepped on a landmine, resulting in the loss of one of his legs.

In addition, a 50-year-old man from Yae Nout Ngarthar Village in Maungdaw Township stepped on a landmine on May 10 while heading to a nearby hillside farm to gather vegetables, resulting in the loss of one of his legs.

Mine clearance operations, the posting of warning signs, distribution of educational pamphlets, and awareness campaigns are being carried out in areas under the control of the Arakan Army (AA), particularly in former battle zones, forests, and along roadsides.

Aid workers helping landmine victims in Arakan said that there is a pressing need for support, including essential supplies, vocational training programs, and job opportunities to help survivors rebuild their lives.
