The Arakan Army (AA) announced on October 1 that six bodies of civilians, allegedly killed by Islamist extremist armed groups, were found along the Arakan-Bangladesh border under AA control.
On September 28, at around 3 p.m., Arakan Army (AA) security personnel discovered six decomposed bodies, reduced to skeletal remains, in a banana plantation about 770 meters northwest of Upper Inn Chaung village in Maungdaw Township.
It was reported that the six bodies had been dumped in four separate locations within the banana plantation—one body in two locations and two bodies in another two locations. The remains are believed to be those of six villagers from Tamanthar and Done Nyo villages in Maungdaw Township who had recently gone missing.
It was reported that Islamist extremist armed groups infiltrated and launched an attack on the Arakan Army’s border security outpost located at Hill Point 601 between Border Posts 56 and 57 in Maungdaw Township.
In addition, the same extremist groups reportedly attempted to seize control of the Done Nyo camp near Done Nyo village in Maungdaw Township.
According to the Arakan Army, the Islamist extremist armed groups infiltrated from inside Bangladesh using various routes and tactics. Along the way, they reportedly abducted, tortured, and killed civilians, dumping the bodies in remote or sparsely populated areas.
The Arakan Army stated that these acts were carried out as targeted killings, but only against non-Muslims. At that time, up to ten cases of missing civilians had already been reported to the AA’s civilian administration.
It was further reported that due to the excessive humidity of the area and the fact that the bodies had been discarded without proper burial, they had decomposed to the point of being reduced to bones.
Therefore, forensic experts are now working together with the families of the missing persons to carry out examinations and identify the bodies.
