Today, September 9, marks the 87th anniversary of Sayadaw U Ottama Day. In areas controlled by the Arakan Army (AA), AA members and young students came to the statue of Sayadaw U Ottama to pay their respects and lay wreaths.
Sayadaw U Ottama was a Buddhist monk who strongly opposed British colonial rule in Myanmar. He was also an important nationalist leader who encouraged people to become more aware of their national rights. In 1921, he became well known for writing “Craddock Get Out,” a message demanding that British Governor Sir Reginald Craddock leave Burma.
Sayadaw U Ottama was imprisoned several times by the British colonial government. He died in prison on September 9, 1939, after going on a hunger strike.
Every year on September 9, people remember and honor Sayadaw U Ottama. They pay their respects at his statue and lay wreaths to honor his contribution to Myanmar’s nationalist movement.
