Military leader Min Aung Hlaing has denied allegations of genocide against Bengalis in Rakhine State, saying that he has a clear conscience and that his military has done nothing against them.

He made the remarks during an interview with TIME magazine reporter Charlie Campbell. He was asked about international sanctions imposed on the Myanmar military and individuals in connection with the situation in Rakhine State.

“Regarding Rakhine and the Bengalis, we have done nothing against them. Therefore, we have a clear conscience and peace of mind,” Min Aung Hlaing said.

He also said that his role was to protect the country’s independence and sovereignty, maintain stability and peace, and safeguard the country while working toward establishing a democratic nation.

“Come and see the situation for yourself. If you accept what opposition groups say and act based on it, you will only get false information,” the military leader said.

He also called on the international community not to accept what he described as false information, but to look at the actual situation in Myanmar and reconsider or ease the sanctions imposed on the country.
