A man who was displaced by the conflict died after falling into the Kaladan River while he was fishing in Ponnagyun Township, an area under the control of the Arakan Army (AA). He reportedly fell from a motorboat after standing up to look at a low-flying aircraft.

The man was identified as 45-year-old Ko Zaw Min Oo. He was originally from Myingyi Kyun Village, Sittwe Township, and had been displaced to Yoe Ngu Village, Ponnagyun Township, since 2023. He made a living by fishing.

The man’s wife told Border News Agency:
“We went fishing after eating. I was told that he stood up to look when a jet came, and then he fell into the water. We still have not been able to find his body.”

At around 12:00 noon on October 2, Zaw Min Oo went fishing with his older brother in the Kaladan River, east of Yoe Ngu Village. When a military fighter aircraft flew at low altitude, he stood up to look at it and fell into the river.

His older brother, who was with him, told Border News Agency:
“We were preparing to put out the fishing net. At that moment, a jet flew very low and made a very loud noise. My younger brother, who was driving the boat, stood up to look at it. Then he fell into the water. It seems that he may have been hit by the boat’s engine shaft. He did not come back to the surface even once.”

The report said that concerns about airstrikes have increased among people in the Arakan region following the September 28 airstrike on the Indian Market in Kyauktaw, which reportedly killed 50 civilians.
