Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has issued an urgent appeal for funding to prevent further cuts to food assistance for over one million Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. The agency requires $15 million for April and a total of $81 million to sustain full rations until the end of 2025.
“The Rohingya refugee crisis remains one of the world’s largest and most protracted,” said Dom Scalpelli, WFP Country Director in Bangladesh. “Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh remain entirely dependent on humanitarian assistance for their survival. Any reduction in food assistance will push them deeper into hunger and force them to resort to desperate measures just to survive.”
Rohingya refugees, who fled persecution and violence in Myanmar, have been living in overcrowded camps in Cox’s Bazar since 2017. With limited opportunities for livelihoods, they rely entirely on humanitarian aid for food, shelter, and medical care. Over the past year, funding shortfalls have already led to ration reductions, worsening malnutrition, and increasing desperation among refugees.
The WFP has warned that without immediate financial support, the situation will further deteriorate, heightening risks of malnutrition, insecurity, and negative coping strategies such as child labor and human trafficking. The organization is calling on the international community to step up before the crisis worsens.
