Torrential monsoon rains have battered the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, damaging more than 1,400 shelters and affecting thousands of families, according to a recent report from UNHCR.
The relentless downpours have triggered landslides, flooding, and extensive damage to shelters, sanitation facilities, and other vital infrastructure. Many refugees have been forced to seek temporary safety in community centers and schools, while humanitarian workers scramble to provide emergency aid.
Despite the dire circumstances, refugee volunteers have shown remarkable resilience. Many are working around the clock to assist their neighbors—supporting emergency repairs, distributing relief items, and helping to relocate the most vulnerable families.
The United Nations and humanitarian partners are urgently calling for increased international support to address the crisis and ensure the safety and dignity of the affected population. Immediate needs include shelter materials, clean water, sanitation services, and food assistance.
“The situation remains critical, and we are doing everything possible to respond quickly,” said a UNHCR spokesperson. “But we cannot do it alone. More resources are urgently needed to protect lives and support recovery efforts.”
With the monsoon season far from over, concerns are growing about further displacement and health risks in the overcrowded camps. Humanitarian agencies are appealing to the international community to act swiftly before the situation worsens.
