A 14-year-old Rohingya boy tragically lost his life on Friday after being swept away by strong floodwaters in Kutupalong Camp-2E near the TV Tower area, local sources confirmed.

The child was reportedly collecting spinach leaves for his family when the incident occurred. Heavy rains over the past several days have triggered flash floods across the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, worsening already fragile living conditions.

Residents and fellow refugees rushed to the scene to try and save the boy, but he was carried away by the surging waters before help could arrive. His body was later recovered downstream.

“His family depended on those small greens to survive,” said one camp resident who witnessed the event. “The flood came suddenly and there was nothing anyone could do.”

The Rohingya camps, home to nearly a million refugees who fled violence in Myanmar, remain extremely vulnerable to seasonal disasters. Poor drainage systems, unstable shelters, and overcrowding make flash floods especially dangerous.

Local authorities and humanitarian organizations have urged residents to stay cautious and avoid risky areas, especially during and after heavy rainfall. However, for many families struggling with food insecurity due to recent aid cuts, even basic survival activities like gathering food can turn deadly.

This incident highlights the urgent need for strengthened disaster preparedness and greater support for Rohingya refugees facing increasing climate-related threats.
