In yet another alarming incident underscoring the insecurity faced by Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, two Rohingya men were reportedly kidnapped and assaulted by unidentified individuals near the Cox’s Bazar Link Road while en route to work.

The victims, Mohammed Anos and Abdullah, residents of Camp 14, Sub-Block D03 and E02 respectively, were abducted around 11:30 AM on Saturday. According to local sources, three unknown men driving a CNC vehicle intercepted the pair, posing as government officials. The assailants asked the victims whether they had permission from the Camp-in-Charge (CIC) to leave the camp. Upon learning that they did not, the men instructed Anos and Abdullah to accompany them to their so-called “office.”

Instead of being taken to an office, the two were forcibly taken away and later subjected to severe physical abuse. The kidnappers then demanded a ransom of 4 lakh Taka from their families in exchange for their release. Following distressing negotiations, the families were able to pay 2 lakh Taka, after which the victims were released.

Both men are currently receiving medical treatment at an MSF (Médecins Sans Frontières) hospital for injuries sustained during the ordeal.

Witnesses report that the kidnappers repeatedly misused the name of the Bangladesh government during the incident, falsely claiming to be acting under official authority.

This incident has sparked renewed fears and outrage among the refugee community. Human rights advocates and community leaders are now calling on the Bangladesh government and law enforcement agencies to investigate the case thoroughly, ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice, and take concrete steps to enhance the safety and protection of Rohingya refugees.

“This kind of exploitation and violence must not be allowed to continue unchecked,” said a local community representative. “We urge the authorities to act swiftly and ensure such crimes are not repeated.”
