The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested six members of the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA), including its notorious leader, Ataullah Abu Ammar Jununi, during a late-night raid in Siddhirganj, Narayanganj.
The operation, conducted on Monday night, targeted a secret gathering at Bhumipalli Tower in the Bhumipalli residential area. The arrested individuals have been identified as:
- Ataullah Abu Ammar Jununi alias Ataullah (Leader of ARSA)
- Mostak Ahmed
- Salimullah
- Asmaul Hosna
- Hasan
- Moniruzzaman
According to Mohammad Shahinur Alam, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Siddhirganj Police Station, the ARSA members were allegedly holding a secret meeting to plan criminal activities in Narayanganj and Mymensingh. Acting on intelligence, RAB swiftly moved in and arrested the group.
During the raid, law enforcement recovered a significant amount of money, a sharp knife, and a chain from the suspects. Authorities have since filed a case against them, and further investigations are underway.
The arrest of Ataullah Abu Ammar Jununi, the top leader of ARSA, marks a major breakthrough in countering militant activities linked to Myanmar-based armed groups in Bangladesh. ARSA has been accused of violent activities in the Rohingya refugee camps of Cox’s Bazar and across the border in Myanmar’s Rakhine State.
Bangladesh authorities have recently intensified crackdowns on ARSA operatives following reports of escalating violence, extortion, and targeted killings in the refugee camps. The arrest of these key members is expected to have a significant impact on ARSA’s operations in the region.
