Kyaukphru, September 8
Residents of Kyaukphru said that around 3 p.m. on the evening of September 5, a civilian was shot and killed by the Myanmar junta troops near Thaphankhar Dam in Kyaukphru Township.
Residents of Tha Byu Taung Village, Kyaukphru Township, said that 41-year-old U Maung Than Yi was shot near Thaphankhar dam, and the person accompanying him was also fired upon, forcing them to flee for their lives.
Kyaukphru residents said that the two men had gone fishing together in a small boat when the junta troops fired at them with rifles. U Maung Than Yi was hit directly in the chest and killed.
“They went fishing together in a boat. The soldiers shot at them with rifles, killing one instantly. When the companion tried to retrieve the body, he was fired upon again and barely managed to escape. The junta military is deliberately terrorizing the civilians,” a Kyaukphru resident told Border News Agency.
Residents of Kyaukphru said the township is heavily militarized, with Myanmar junta forces, including naval warships, deployed, and that civilians are restricted by the junta from fishing, traveling, and carrying out other livelihood activities.
In addition, residents of Kyaukphru said that restrictions on their freedom of movement and work have made it difficult for them to earn a living and meet basic needs.
“There are still many people who are on the verge of starvation. Those who go out to find food are being shot or arrested because they cannot endure the hunger. Only soldiers and military officials are able to eat properly. No one is resolving these problems,” a resident of Kyaukphru told Border News Agency.
Although there is only one flight route from Kyaukphru to Yangon, residents said that travelers and goods transporters have to pay large sums of money to the junta’s military commission and can only travel or transport goods with the commission’s permission.
Residents of Kyaukphru said that frequent artillery and gunfire from the junta have caused civilian casualties and injuries, while villages, homes, and educational, healthcare, and religious infrastructure have also been damaged.
The Arakan Army (AA) stated that intense fighting is ongoing in Kyaukphru Township between the AA and the Myanmar junta, with the junta forces combining soldiers, firearms, reinforcements, and artillery to attack the AA.
