How Can Civilians Protect Themselves from Airstrikes by the Myanmar Military?

Border News Agency
Kyauktaw, October 2

As the Myanmar military has been carrying out airstrikes on civilian areas that are not involved in military operations, civilians should systematically follow safety measures to protect themselves from the danger.

  1. Preparations Before an Airstrike

Prepare a bomb shelter or bunker in advance.

Dig a bomb shelter approximately 4–5 feet deep in your yard or nearby area.

Cover and reinforce the shelter with wood, sandbags, or soil.

Prepare an emergency bag.

Keep an emergency bag ready to grab and carry if you need to evacuate quickly. It should contain drinking water, dry food, first-aid supplies and medicines, a lamp/flashlight, a phone, and important documents.

Stay alert for early warnings.

Pay close attention to local air-raid warnings, sirens, and warnings issued by local resistance organizations.

  1. What to Do During an Airstrike

Drop, Cover, and Hold.

When you hear an aircraft, do not stand in an open area or on a road to watch it.

Immediately drop face-down to the ground.

Use both hands to cover your head and neck.

Keep your mouth slightly open and cover your ears. This can help reduce the risk of eardrum and lung injuries from the blast wave.

If you are inside a building, stay away from windows, glass, and doors.

If you are in a multi-story building, take shelter on the lowest floor, in areas with strong walls, in corners, or under sturdy structures such as bathroom areas or stairways.

If you are in a forest, mountainous area, or farmland, take shelter in natural ditches, shallow ravines, or behind large trees and other solid natural cover.

  1. What to Do and Avoid After an Airstrike

Do not immediately go outside.

Because airstrikes may occur more than once, remain in a safe location and wait for at least 20 minutes, even after the sound of aircraft has stopped.

Never touch unexploded bombs or ordnance.

Do not approach, inspect, or handle unexploded bombs, ammunition, or fragments of weapons left on the ground.

Be alert to fire and electrical hazards.

Do not immediately enter buildings that have been hit by an airstrike.

Watch out for fallen electrical wires and fires.

In addition, people should not rush to the site of an airstrike within seconds of the attack or take photographs or videos.

This is because, according to the report, the Myanmar military has sometimes carried out a second airstrike targeting rescuers and people who gathered to observe the scene after the initial attack.

Therefore, civilians are urged to systematically follow air-raid warnings and safety instructions and to pay close attention to emergency guidance issued by local resistance organizations and relevant authorities.
