El Niño may cause drought, water shortages, irregular rainfall, and high temperatures. Border News Agency shares practical ways farmers can prepare for these conditions and protect their crops and farming activities.

1. Use Water Efficiently in Rice Fields

Use a rice farming method called Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD). This method does not require rice fields to remain flooded all the time. Instead, farmers allow the water level to drop before adding water again, while making sure the soil has enough moisture.

Managing water carefully helps reduce waste and conserve water supplies.

2. Improve the Soil and Keep It Moist

Use a method called mulching, which involves covering the soil with rice straw, dry leaves, or other plant materials.

This helps reduce water evaporation from the soil and improves its ability to retain moisture.

3. Choose Crops and Seeds That Can Withstand Drought

Grow short-season crops that need less water and can better withstand drought.

Farmers should also choose good-quality seeds and take care to ensure that plants have enough space and proper airflow to grow well.

4. Prevent and Control Pests and Plant Diseases

Use Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to protect crops from harmful insects and pests.

Combine natural pest control methods with other suitable measures to reduce crop damage and control plant diseases.

5. Prepare in Advance for Livestock Care

Store enough feed and water for livestock before drought and extreme heat occur.

During periods of high temperatures, keep animals in shaded areas and provide regular vaccinations to help protect them from diseases.

6. Store Emergency Food and Supplies in Advance

If severe drought or unusual weather conditions occur, families should prepare emergency food supplies in advance for themselves and their livestock.

7. Work Together to Support the Community

Cooperate with community savings groups and establish emergency funds. Work together to address water shortages and other farming-related problems.

Border News Agency urges farmers and the public to regularly follow warnings issued by the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology and take early action to protect their crops and livelihoods from natural disasters.
