Residents of Arakan say that the number of children begging for food has increased in some townships controlled by the Arakan Army (AA), amid a shortage of employment opportunities during the rainy season.
They said that displaced families are facing increasing difficulties in meeting their basic needs because employment opportunities are limited during the rainy season, forcing them to send underage children into communities to beg for food.
“People begging for food existed before, but the number has increased recently. We are seeing more children under the age of ten and teenagers among those begging,” a leader of a displacement camp in Ponnagyun Township told Border News Agency.
Residents said the number of people begging for food has increased because displaced people are not receiving international humanitarian assistance while the prices of basic food commodities continue to rise.
The children reportedly have to hitchhike on passenger vehicles to travel from the displacement camps where they live to other villages to ask for rice donations.
“They sit by the main road and wait for passing vehicles to take them to other villages. However, many drivers do not pick them up,” another displacement camp leader in Ponnagyun Township told Border News Agency.
Displaced people also said that the children are facing difficulties traveling because passenger vehicle drivers often refuse to give them rides.
Camp officials said that the displacement camps urgently need assistance and that support is particularly necessary to help ensure that children can meet their basic food and living needs.
They are also calling on relevant organizations to provide assistance so that children can attend school and have better access to basic necessities.
Civil society organizations said that because the displaced children have to beg for food themselves every day to meet their basic needs, they are losing opportunities for education, while their prospects for long-term survival and sustainable livelihoods remain uncertain.
