More than 800,000 methamphetamine tablets worth over one billion kyats and allegedly being transported from Shan State to Rakhine State were seized in Pyawbwe Township, according to an announcement issued by Myanmar’s Drug Enforcement Police on September 9.
According to the authorities, a mini-bus was stopped and searched on the Pyawbwe–Natmauk road on September 4, resulting in the seizure of more than 860,000 methamphetamine tablets.
Following investigations into those involved in transporting and trafficking the drugs, further arrests were reportedly made on the Mandalay–Yangon Expressway and in Meiktila, Yamethin and Pyay townships.
The methamphetamine tablets were reportedly transported in stages from Kalaw Township in southern Shan State through Yamethin and Aunglan to Ann Township in Rakhine State. They were allegedly intended to be transported onward through Maungdaw to a neighboring country.
Those involved in transporting and trafficking the drugs are reportedly facing further legal action under Myanmar’s Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law as well as the Anti-Money Laundering Law.
