The Arakan National League (ULA) has resolved a dispute that occurred on September 14 at the Khaingkhi Village jetty in Siaha District, Mizoram State, India, and has taken action against those involved in the incident, according to the spokesperson for the Arakan National League.
The incident began with a verbal dispute over the rotation system for arranging boats transporting goods to Paletwa at the Khaingkhi Village Boat Supervision Committee office. The argument was between a Rakhine boat operator, Ko Zaw Naing Lin, and an official from the MTP Youth Association.
Following the dispute, Ko Zaw Naing Lin, who was dissatisfied with the situation, brought around 30 friends to the MTP office, where they reportedly damaged the office and attempted to set it on fire. In response, MTP youths reportedly damaged shops in the marketplace on the Paletwa side.
According to Khaing Thukha, the incident was merely an ordinary group altercation among local civilian youths that arose after alcohol consumption. Officials from both sides have met and resolved the matter, while those responsible have also apologized.
Ko Zaw Naing Lin, who was identified as one of the main people involved in leading the incident, along with several other youths, has been arrested and detained by the ULA’s Department of Law Enforcement and Justice. They will continue to face legal action in accordance with the law, according to the statement.
Although the situation in the area has now returned to stability, Khaing Thukha pointed out that some media outlets and organizations have exaggerated the ordinary incident and portrayed it as an ethnic conflict.
Boat operators in the area include people from various local ethnic communities, including Rakhine, Khumi, and Mro. He also urged people not to believe attempts to incite tensions and worsen relations between the two sides by reporting the incident inaccurately or without presenting the facts.
