The Myanmar Board of Examinations announced this morning, July 27, that only 550 students passed the 2024–2025 academic year university entrance examinations in Rakhine State.

It was reported that a total of 1,564 students, both male and female, took the university entrance examinations in Rakhine.

Among them, only 550 students passed, bringing the pass rate to 35.7 percent, according to the announcement.

The university entrance examinations could only be held in the three townships of Sittwe, Kyaukphru, and Manaung, which remain under the control of the Myanmar junta.

In total, the exams were conducted at eight examination centers: four centers in Sittwe, two centers in Kyaukphru, and two centers in Manaung.

Among the candidates, two female students from Kyaukphru Township and one male student from Sittwe Township achieved distinctions in four subjects, making them the highest scorers in the examinations.

At the Kyaukphru High School No. 1 examination center, Ma Saung Theingi won distinctions in Myanmar, Chemistry, Physics, and Biology, while Ma Maw Maw Zin also passed with distinctions in the same four subjects: Myanmar, Chemistry, Physics, and Biology.

At the Sittwe High School No. 2 examination center, Maung Soe Min Aung passed with distinctions in four subjects: Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, and Biology.

In Rakhine State, a total of 3,264 students had registered to sit for the first day of the university entrance examinations, which began on March 17, 2025.

However, 1,700 students were absent, and only 47.92 percent of the registered students actually sat for the examinations.

In the three townships of Sittwe, Kyaukphru, and Manaung, a total of 1,564 students took the exams—741 male students and 823 female students.

The Ministry of Education stated that the nationwide pass rate for the 2025 university entrance examinations exceeded 48 percent.

In Rakhine State, during the 2023–2024 academic year, a total of 8,534 students sat for the university entrance examinations, and 5,253 of them passed.
