Child sexual abuse cases are increasing due to the irresponsible use of social media and drug use, according to the Central Party Office of the United League of Arakan (ULA).

Daw Hla Mya Khaing, an official from the ULA Central Office, said, “Among the main causes of child sexual abuse are loss of awareness caused by excessive consumption of drugs and alcohol, as well as addiction to pornographic texts and videos viewed on social media.”

She also said that 93 percent of perpetrators of child sexual abuse are family members, relatives, or people close to the victims, while only about 7 percent are strangers who have no prior relationship with the children.

“Parents and guardians should teach children that no one has the right to touch their private body parts. They should also encourage children to speak openly and courageously to their parents if anyone attempts to touch them with inappropriate intentions,” she said.

The Arakan People’s Revolutionary Government is reportedly continuing awareness-raising activities aimed at preventing and eliminating child sexual abuse through educational talks, the distribution of informational pamphlets, and podcasts.

The ULA Central Party Office has also called on media organizations, writers, and artists to participate in efforts to prevent and eliminate child sexual abuse.
