A 55-year-old man, U Maung Aye Hla, who sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl in Kyauktaw Township, which is under the control of the Arakan Army (AA), has been sentenced to a total of 30 years in prison with hard labor by the Mrauk-U Special Court.
The Mrauk-U Special Court heard the case on September 5 and sentenced U Maung Aye Hla to 20 years of imprisonment with hard labor under Section 376 of the Penal Code and a separate 10-year sentence with hard labor under Section 377.
U Maung Aye Hla is from Thein Tan Village in Kyauktaw Township. On April 7, he took the 14-year-old daughter of a family working as caretakers at his garden in Ram Chaung, claiming that they were going to collect a solar panel. On the way, he forcibly raped the girl inside a temporary shelter.
He also allegedly forced the girl’s eight-year-old younger sister to engage in indecent acts. The victim’s mother filed a complaint on May 15 with the relevant Law Enforcement and Public Security Department.
Officials subsequently investigated U Maung Aye Hla and arrested him at his home on July 30. During questioning, he reportedly confessed to committing the offenses. He was formally charged on August 28.
