More than 1,000 acres of rice fields have been damaged after river water entered through a water gate at the Kalapone Dam in Mrauk-U Township, which is controlled by the Arakan Army (AA), amid continuous heavy rainfall.

The damage to the rice fields occurred after some people catching fish and shrimp at the water gate allowed river water to flow into the fields. Following an on-site inspection and instructions from the local battalion party chairman, the inflow of river water was halted starting September 1.

However, because there has been insufficient rainfall, water levels in the rice fields have become low, causing difficulties for farmers. Local farmers are calling for river water to be released into the fields again in a timely manner.

As the affected farmland has not yet been fully replanted, local farmers have been replanting since September 4. They are in need of assistance with cultivation costs and access to water.
