The future of major economic projects backed by India and China is largely dependent on the United League of Arakan/Arakan Army (ULA/AA), as the Arakan Army controls most of the areas where the two countries’ key economic projects are located, according to research findings from ISP-Myanmar.
The Arakan Army controls 92.6 percent of the Paletwa area and the Arakha region, establishing a strong presence both militarily and administratively.
The Arakan Army has full control over Paletwa and parts of the Arakha region through which the entire route of India’s Kaladan River Multimodal Transit Transport Project passes.
In addition, the Arakan Army has surrounded and established territorial control over most areas where China’s Kyaukphyu Special Economic Zone and deep-sea port projects are located. It also maintains separate control over the area where the Kyetchaung Economic Zone is situated.
The junta has imposed martial law in 14 townships across the Arakha region, excluding Sittwe, Kyaukphyu, and Myebon. As a result, the role of the Arakan Army in major international development projects in the region is becoming increasingly significant.
