The Myanmar military carried out an airstrike on the border area between Kyauktaw and Mrauk-U townships, which are controlled by the Arakan Army (AA), shortly after midnight on September 12.
Two Myanmar military fighter jets reportedly dropped five-hundred-pound bombs and attacked an area between Kyaung Pho Village in Kyauktaw Township and Nann Ta Village in Mrauk-U Township.
The airstrike was intense enough for residents in both Kyauktaw and Mrauk-U townships to hear it. Local residents said they could hear the explosions for about 30 minutes.
“We heard the sound of the aircraft, explosions, and return fire. The aircraft sounded very close. We kept hearing explosions, including several secondary explosions,” a woman from Mrauk-U Township told Border News Agency.
Residents said they were worried and frightened because the attack may have involved cluster bombs, as they continued to hear repeated explosions for some time after the initial attack.
Fighting has intensified in the area as the AA launches a counteroffensive against the Myanmar military’s offensive in Ponnagyun and attempts to establish a foothold toward Sittwe.
The AA has previously warned civilians to remain alert because the Myanmar military could carry out airstrikes in other areas and towns as the fighting continues.
The Myanmar military also attacked Kyaung Pho Village on November 28, 2025, dropping two 500-pound bombs from a fighter jet between approximately 10:40 a.m. and 10:45 a.m.
In addition, on February 9, 2025, at around 4 p.m., the Myanmar military carried out airstrikes with fighter jets on the area between Kyaung Pho Village and Nann Ta Village.
