The United League of Arakan/Arakha Army (ULA/AA) is estimated to collect around 500 million Myanmar kyats in taxes each month from businesses and local residents in areas under its control, according to the research organization ISP-Myanmar.
The report also estimates that the ULA/AA receives up to around 1 billion kyats per month from internet usage fees. The collected revenue is mainly used for military needs, while some funds are also reportedly spent on repairing roads and bridges and on the health sector.
According to the ULA/AA’s tax regulations, households are required to pay 1,000 to 6,000 kyats per month in household tax. A water tax of 3,000 kyats and a township tax of 3,000 to 6,000 kyats per month are also collected.
For motor vehicles, the monthly tax ranges from 10,000 to 30,000 kyats, while a driving license fee of 50,000 kyats is collected. For the transportation of timber, fruit, and other natural resources, taxes ranging from 10 percent to 30 percent of the total value are reportedly imposed.
Currently, the ULA/AA controls an estimated 92.6 percent of the Arakha and Paletwa regions. It has also formed the Arakha People’s Revolutionary Government and is carrying out administrative and tax-collection activities in the areas under its control.
