Heavy fighting continued in Ponnagyun Township, where the military junta is attempting to launch a counteroffensive and retake control of the area, according to ground-based military sources. The fighting continued until after 9 p.m. on September 30.

Ground-based military sources said the military junta began firing artillery shells into Ponnagyun Township in the morning of September 30 and continued heavy shelling throughout the day and into the night.

“They are firing a lot of artillery. They keep firing continuously. Sometimes they fire several rounds at once. They are still firing now, toward the Kwan Taung side,” a ground-based military source told Border News Agency.

At around 6 a.m. on September 30, the military junta shelled Tanbek Hlan Village in Ponnagyun Township.

Although residents of Tanbek Hlan and some other villages had fled their homes because of the fighting, the military junta has continued to carry out frequent artillery shelling and airstrikes in the area.

Residents said they were also concerned because military fighter jets had been carrying out attacks in the area.

“The fighter jets are coming. Everyone has to run into the bomb shelters,” a resident of Ponnagyun told Border News Agency.

The military junta has been conducting an offensive in Ponnagyun Township, but the Arakan Army (AA) has been putting up strong resistance, preventing the junta forces from advancing.

In addition, the Arakan Army has launched a counteroffensive, forcing the military junta to mount strong resistance near the border of Sittwe Township.
