Kyauktaw, September 30

Four Muslim civilians were among those killed in an airstrike on September 28 near India Market and the Kachapana Di Bridge in Kyauktaw, a town controlled by the Arakan Army (AA).

The airstrike was reportedly carried out by the Myanmar military.

The victims included 45-year-old U Nyi Nyi Win, son of U Ashura Man, and 25-year-old Ko Ko Aung, son of U Maung Ni. Both were from Paung Dok Village, Mrauk-U Township.

The other two victims were 40-year-old U Aye U Ali, son of U Gula Hla Hsin, from Taung Htaung Village, Kyauktaw Township, and 37-year-old Daw Ma Thein Nu, also known as Anuwara, daughter of U Zaw Yaw.

The airstrike also injured 57 civilians, including 10 Muslims. Among the injured were 17 people who suffered serious injuries and are in critical condition.

The Kyauktaw town market and nearby residential areas were severely damaged by the airstrike. Local people are now in need of medicine and emergency assistance.

The Arakan People’s Revolutionary Government and local aid organizations are continuing to help with the burial of those who died and provide medical treatment to those who were injured.

The Arakan Army has strongly condemned what it described as attacks by the Myanmar military on schools, hospitals, markets, and residential areas where civilians live. The AA said that those responsible would be held accountable.

Human rights activists have also criticized the reported attacks on civilian areas. They said that systematically attacking civilian targets that are not connected to military operations could violate international humanitarian law, including the Geneva Conventions, and could amount to serious war crimes.
