The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has urged China to intensify its efforts in facilitating the safe, voluntary, and dignified repatriation of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar’s Rakhine State.

The appeal was made by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir during a five-day official visit to China. The BNP delegation, consisting of nine members, visited China from June 22 at the invitation of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

At a press briefing held at the BNP Chairperson’s office in Gulshan, Dhaka, Fakhrul stated, “We urged China to take more effective steps so that the Rohingya can return to their homeland safely, voluntarily, and with dignity.”

According to Fakhrul, Chinese officials responded positively to the BNP’s request and assured the delegation of their continued efforts to encourage the Myanmar government to initiate a peaceful and timely repatriation process.

“The Chinese authorities promised sincere efforts to engage with Myanmar for Rohingya repatriation,” he added.

Fakhrul noted that the visit also contributed to strengthening bilateral relations between the BNP and the Communist Party of China, expressing hope that this partnership would help advance the interests of both nations and support the Rohingya people.

The BNP’s diplomatic engagement with China comes amid growing concerns over the prolonged displacement of over a million Rohingya refugees living in camps in Bangladesh since fleeing violence in Myanmar in 2017.
