Kyauktaw, September 30
Nine of the civilians killed in the Myanmar military’s airstrike on Kyauktaw, an area controlled by the Arakan Army (AA), have not yet been identified by name or gender.
The Myanmar military reportedly attacked the area near India Market and the Kachapana Di Bridge on the afternoon of September 28, using two 500-pound bombs.
The airstrike killed 50 civilians, including market vendors, loading and unloading workers, and people passing through the area. Another 57 people were injured.
Nine of the bodies were so badly damaged that it is still not possible to determine who the victims were or whether they were male or female. The AA is continuing to investigate and identify the victims.
The AA strongly condemned what it described as deliberate attacks by the Myanmar military on schools, hospitals, markets, and places where civilians live. The AA said that those responsible would face an effective response.
Human rights activists have said that systematically attacking civilian targets that are not connected to military operations is a serious violation of international humanitarian law, including the Geneva Conventions, and may constitute serious war crimes.
